Oasis Biography

Originally known as “The Rain”, the English rock band was formed in Manchester in 1991. With eight UK number-one hits, Oasis has sold 65 million albums world-wide and collected 33 music awards. That’s pretty impressive for a group of boys who started their music careers singing on the Manchester club circuit.

Oasis began with four members (Liam Gallagher, Paul Arthurs, Paul McGuigan, and Tony McCarroll), but were soon joined by Noel Gallagher, Liam’s older brother. Their big break came in 1993 when they were discovered by the co-owner of Creation Records; they released their first album, “Definitely Maybe,” in 1994. Their 1997 album “Be Here Now” was the fastest-selling album in UK chart history. Between 2000 and 2002, Paul Arthurs and Paul McGuigan left the band, and Oasis experienced a temporary decline in their international popularity.

The musical style of Oasis most closely resembles that of The Beatles, but their style has been associated with The Who, Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones, and The Stooges. Several bands, including The Arctic Monkeys and The Killers, have cited Oasis as influencing their musical styles. Since the signing of their first album in 1994, Oasis has lost and gained eight band members. In fact, the only original band members left are the Gallagher brothers.

Career highlights

  • Oasis has won fifteen NME Awards, five BRIT Awards, nine Q Awards, and four MTV Europe Music Awards.
  • “Be Here Now” (1997) was the fastest-selling album in UK history, selling 423,000 copies on the first day of release; the album still holds that record.
  • Rumors have been circulating that Oasis could be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame in 2009-but they may have to contend with their old rivals from Blur again.

Oasis Fun Facts:

  • The words to the song “Shakermaker” resulted in a lawsuit by Coca Cola, claiming Oasis had lifted words and melody from their advertising jingle “I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing”.
  • Their song “All Around the World” is a whole nine minutes and twenty seconds.
  • In August of 1995, both Oasis and their rival-band “Blur” released new albums. Blur’s album out-sold Oasis’s by 58,000 copies, although the reason for that is suspected to be due to Blur’s lower price.
  • In 1995, Noel Gallagher told “The Observer” that he hoped two members of their rival band, Blur, would “catch AIDS and die". He later apologized.

Oasis in the press

“Many new rock bands leave the starting gate with fists flying, eager to batter down obstacles on the road to stardom. But few have been as hands-on as Oasis.” Rolling Stone, 1995

“that same Gallagher swagger still courses through it, but it doesn’t have to rely on terrace-chant choruses (of which Noel’s probably exhausted himself by now) to get its point across.” NME 2008 (Dig out your soul review)
